Shardul Thakur has been left out of the India squad for the third and fourth Test against England, named on Wednesday (February 17). Umesh Yadav will join the team in Ahmedabad after a fitness test and replace Thakur in the squad. Umesh last played for India in the Boxing Day Test against Australia in December 2020, before injuring his calf.
KL Rahul, the India opener, who has achieved full fitness will also be eligible for the third Test, a day-night affair set to be played in Motera’s Sardar Patel Stadium from February 24. Shubman Gill, who didn’t take the field on the fourth day of the second Test, has been named in the squad.
Ankit Rajpoot, Avesh Khan, Sandeep Warrier, Krishnappa Gowtham and Saurabh Kumar have been named as net bowlers while KS Bharat and Rahul Chahar have been named as standbys.
Abhimanyu Easwaran, Shahbaz Nadeem and Priyank Panchal have also been released to play the Vijay Hazare Trophy, along with Shardul Thakur.
The four-match Test series is currently locked at 1-1 after the two matches in Chennai. A loss in either of the last two matches of the series could prove fatal for the chances of both the sides’ qualification chances to the ICC World Test Championship final.
