The strategic Srinagar-Kargil highway remained shut for fifth consecutive day on Monday due to heavy snowfall.
Meanwhile, the authorities have launched a rescue operation to evacuate two truck drivers stranded near Zojila for last five days.
Deputy commissioner Ganderbal Dr Piyush Singla said that a special joint rescue operation has been launched by the district administration; army’s HAWS unit camped at Sonamarg and Air force to evacuate two truck drivers stranded at Zojila.
“We have made contact with them. They are safe. We are making efforts to rescue and evacuate them to safety as soon as possible,” DC said, adding that they hope to rescue the driver by the end of Monday.
Reports said at least 11 feet snow has accumulated in Zojilla area.
An official said that Project Vijayak Kargil of BRO is working on snow clearance and also trying to reach the stranded truckers.
