National Conference (NC) leader and former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah, on Wednesday alleged that the Jammu and Kashmir administration is ‘going out of its way’ to help the BJP. Abdullah’s comments come ahead of the DDC polls in the union territory.

“The J&K administration is going out of its way to help the BJP & it’s recently created king’s party by locking up candidates opposed to the BJP, using security as an excuse. If the security situation isn’t conducive to campaigning what was the need to announce elections?” Abdullah said in a tweet.

In yet another tweet, the NC leader claimed that ‘candidates are being stopped from campaigning’ and taunted saying- “Is this the safe, terror-free J&K the Home Minister was tweeting about yesterday?”

People’s Democratic Party (PDP) chief Mehbooba Mufti also claimed that non-BJP candidates for DDC polls aren’t allowed to campaign freely & are being locked up on the pretence of security. “But BJP & its proxies are given full bandobast to move around. Is this the democracy that GOI claimed its promoting in yesterday’s phone convo with US Pres elect?” she questioned.

BJP, Gupkar alliance leaders exchange war-of-words

The PDP and National Conference, along with other state parties have formed a larger, Gupkar Alliance to challenge the BJP in the union territory. The alliance has been demanding restoration of the special status of J&K and have alleged that the BJP has been killing democracy in the state.

Earlier this week, the BJP and Gupkar Alliance leaders were engaged in a bitter war-of-words with the former slamming the alliance for wanting to involve foreign powers in J&K to restore Article 370. Farooq Abdullah, the seniormost leader in the state said that he was committed to restoring the special status of J&K. The BJP slammed the Congress party for joining the alliance and asked its national leadership to clarify its stand on Article 370. ( TN )
