Knowledge is power and to make a man powerful we must make him knowledgeable. One who gains knowledge gains power and more the knowledge more is the power of the knowledgeable. Although our first priority is not always power pure and simple, it rather is to get wherewithal to live life well and live it with respectably and honorably. Anyhow all men want to gain knowledge whatever the priority and purpose. It is a known fact that not all people succeed in gaining education but the desire to get educated remains almost in all.
Though the definition of knowledge and education is broad but here it is confined to that form of knowledge, and that education, which is gained through the formal mode. Otherwise life is the greatest university of all, the knowledge gained though a complete life span is so immense that multitudes of formal degrees and qualifications cannot accommodate that. But, let’s stick to the confined definition of the knowledge and deal with the formal mode of education.
Gaining knowledge through the formal modes of education, in schools, colleges and universities is not easy. It requires investment of resources, concentration and time which not all are willing to invest. The children in particular are not ready to spend any time in studying. They love playing and that is all what they require. Education for them is a useless activity and playing with their friends, and gadgets of the modern age, is the only fruitful thing.
Hence, to inculcate the habits of studying in children is a laborious task. It requires consistent parental supervision, efforts of teachers and societal cooperation which makes this possible. But, even after that many parents fail to get the desired results from their children, and desired habits inculcated in them. Many children succeed in getting adopted to the ambience of the institutions of formal education. They give appropriate time, energy and metal effort towards their studies.
Coming to the performance of children it varies, depending mostly upon their capabilities and hard work. At times the capable ones get ahead of their fellows who comparatively work hard. Nevertheless, it is not always capability and hard work which decides the desirability or otherwise of the outcomes. The proper techniques of disseminating education by teachers and the appropriate way of dealing with the children by parents goes a long way in making children to gasp things more quickly and to make them to retain the same for the longer periods of time.
If parents and teachers take due care of these things the performance of the students could be enhanced to a great extent, including in those children who usually lag behind. The first and foremost thing is to make the student an active and willing participant of the process of education. The student should not feel any compulsion and coercion. In the current system of education both the things are used to a lesser or greater extent which ultimately have the potential to prove counterproductive.
Children cannot be made to pursue their education without compelling them to attend their schools and complete their home works but that is only for initial days, and may be years of the schooling. Once the initial period passes studying should be a habit of students not a burden as they often feel. To make it habit it needs to discipline the day-to-day activities of the children. Each activity of life including schooling and schooling related activities should be performed at the schedule times, and for definite times. With time they will become part of their habits which is the biggest step towards making a person successful in life.
The next big thing is to make students gain more in lesser time. For this the process of education should move beyond the curriculum and syllabus system and show children the ways and means about how the efforts can be directed in the right direction. The teachers should know the ways and means of gaining higher levels of concentration, attention and focus. They should have the basic knowledge about the mechanism how memory works, how things move from the conscious to subconscious mind and how they are recalled.
If faults lie at these stages of concentration and inability to recall howsoever efforts a child may invest the result cannot be on the expected and desired lines. Contrarily, if students are taught the way how to concentrate, how to be attentive and how to focus, the studying process could become much easily and less laborious for the children. The children would become active and willing participants in this process by proper way of education.
Hardly anything of this sort is taught to the children during their initial stages. The involvement of senses plays crucial role in quality of study but hardly anyone knows how to achieve that. We look things than see them; we never use the ideal concentration to yield what is to be yielded. Without the proper methodology and without the proper involvement of senses we could grasp a topic in hours or days which, when senses are used properly an in combination, could be gained in minutes.
The result is that education always remains an activity of great labor for them and once they get the first chance they move out of it. Perhaps this is the main reason why many brilliant students and high performers opt for lower level jobs in the government sector in Kashmir and chose easy way of living. Had education become their habit and had they know the ways and means of productive work in education process they would have given themselves at least a chance to do better and get better professional outcomes.
Not only in schools but when we enter into the realm where we aspire for professional and administrative courses the experts entrust upon us to give quality time for the preparation. The quality time only a few know what does that mean. Those who know the meaning know not how to achieve that, many deserving candidates fail because they don’t know how that quality time is given and by the time they come to know, if they ever come to know, it is too late.
About the human mind is a marvelous organ. Its capabilities remain mostly untapped. None of the human mind in human history, howsoever brilliant, has been used more than 20% of their capabilities. The purpose of education process should be to get optimum out of this organ. This can be accomplished by working naturally by use of the agencies and subordinate organs of this organ. If they are used in an ordered and coordinated manner, and as per their natural tendencies, there is no doubt that even the most ordinary students will perform extraordinarily. May be different but each mind possesses unique capabilities which should be discovered and groomed to get the most out of it.
The teachers and parents too if possible should possess the minimum knowledge about the structural and functional intricacies of human mind, about how by making efforts the lost memories can be recalled and how progressively this recall becomes easy and accurate. If the current breed of teachers is not skilled in this regard the government should involve experts of the field to train the teachers.
The problem with the parents, teachers, policy makers and the society at large is that they decide things from above. They take into consideration the posts and level of administrative hierarchy they belong to. They forget to include the target, they miss the child for whom all the policies are made, techniques are formed and interventions designed. Better instead is to come to the level of the children at the initial level of schooling and once the children moves higher the corresponding requirements should also be met by the education process.
A child entering in the realm of schooling cannot be benefited by the sophisticated wording and framing of the policy documents. The qualifications and capabilities of the teachers and parents do not help them either. What helps the child is the easier way how the English alphabet can be remembered for life. Keeping a student indoors for the whole day to study is not a wise thing to do, rather if we are able to make that student to study one hour with concentration, attention and focus wonderful outcomes could be accomplished from the child.
Education should be a lifelong process. In the contemporary world one must learn, unlearn and relearn too often to remain updated. The coming ages may become more challenging. Therefore, the children and students should be made capable enough to face those challenges. That can be achieved by simulating them to the process of education as per the natural inclinations of mind and body. If that is achieved the gen next can overcome all the challenge of future life. They duly deserve to be made capable.
