The recent advancements and developments at the cost of environment is an illusion if we think that we are growing towards prosperity. We are inviting an unforeseen disaster in future of which we never care. Our interference in nature to such an extent will only destroy us if we think that we are advancing by destroying nature we are befooling ourselves.
Our state has a very vast potential of producing hydro electricity but in a quist to achieve one thing we are loosing much more in return. Under the grab of advancement and development we have destroyed much of our natural flora and fauna and large part of our forest area..
The experts framing our Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) to any project in Kashmir is all together neglect it’s devastating effects on our natural climate and just by constructing roads, paying huge compensation to local inhabitants, and constructing hospitals and play grounds is it enough to compensate our loses for the environmental degradation. Such projects may add to the glory to our state for the output which they will provide but for the local community it would be always a life time danger for them in so many ways of which the authorities never bother to find the remedial measures to such concerns..
We have not learnt from the past experiences of Uttharkhand floods
June 2013, a multi-day cloudburst centered on the North Indian state Uttarakhand caused devastating floods and landslides becoming the country’s worst natural disaster since the 2004 tsnami.
Most of the environmentalists have blamed the excessive human interference with natural environment as the cause for such disaster.
Unplanned development is also destroying the ecology of mountains as well None of the environmental laws are implemented in ecologically fragile areas in Kashmir and the development is going unabated. Dynamite blasts are required to cut mountains and pave way for the construction of dams. On a Richter scale, such blasts are equivalent to an earthquake of the magnitude of 4.0, which is responsible to aggravate landslides.
Besides such development activities reduces our total coverage area of forests. How far we are planting after cutting down a single tree everyone knows better although we have a policy where if we cut down one tree we will plant 10 in Liu of one.
Our climate and temperature is going to change now inversely. God forbid in future snowing and winter in Kashmir will only be a history if the environmental degradation continues at this alarming speed.
The recent expert advices by the experts to North Kashmir not to grow paddy this year is just a signal that disaster is coming the big dams and reservoirs not only pose a threat to aquatic life but it will make barren thousands of acres of fertile land by diverting the flow of water,, chances of flooding the fertile lands cannot be ruled out even. There is possibility of both.
Our environmental impact assignment policy is mostly politically motivated where we took less care of environmental remedial measures and more care of our personal and political needs that is why most of the projects are approved in Jammu and Kashmir while neglecting the Environmental impact assignments reports or we never implement such reports..
I am no one to preach, but as a responsible citizen, we should not walk away or forget this natural disaster just by saying that human greed and corruption has no end. Instead it’s to do something because,,
“ It’s Your Life, Its Only ONE Life,
It’s TIME to ACT, It’s TIME to take ACTION,
Because it is WANTED!! ”
