Srinagar Sep 27 : A youth who was killed during a cordon-and-search-operation launched by the government forces in Qamarwari area of Srinagar was laid to rest at Eidgah amid pro-freedom slogans on Thursday.
Witnesses said that the forces lobbed several tear gas shells as the body of Muhammad Saleem Malik was being marched to Eidgah from his native Noorbagh area.
They said that thousands of people participated in his funeral prayers.
Reports said the forces launched a CASO in Noorbagh area of Qamarwari around 5am. A top police official said that CASO was launched in the area after inputs about the presence of militants in a house belonging to Muhammad Yaqoob Malik. He said shots were fired during the CASO in which the house owner’s house Saleem Malik suffered a bullet injury and died.
The official said that the police was looking into the incident. Meanwhile, curfew has been imposed in downtown Srinagar to thwart protests against the killing of the civilian. Internet has also been suspended in Srinagar and adjoining Budgam district.
