Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Vice President Abdul Rahman Veeri on Sunday expressed serious concern over the eruption of the paddy blast disease in Kashmir, stating that the losses being incurred by the masses are massive and unimaginable.
Veeri while meeting various delegations in Anantnag was appraised over the worrisome situation caused in Kashmir valley and particularly in South Kashmir due to the paddy blast disease in the farms.
Veeri was also informed about how at the time of the harvesting season in Kashmir such a disease has caused heavy toll on the livelihood of the farming community which is already gasping for survival after the catastrophic floods of 2014 and then due to ill-effects of the climate change.
Asking the government to initiate a full-fledged and time bound investigation to find out the reasons behind the eruption of the paddy blast disease in Kashmir amid the peak harvesting season, the PDP vice President stated that the concerned departments and helmsmen need to make all necessary measures to find out what has caused such a catastrophic situation in the Valley.
He further asked the Governor administration to access the losses incurred by the farming community due to the disease in their crops and mitigate the damages. “The livelihood of lakhs of people in Kashmir is dependent on farming and when such a worrisome situation has emerged, the state government is duty bound access the losses and mitigate the same at an earliest,” Veeri said.
Assuring the aggrieving farming community all necessary help at the present time of crises, Veeri said he will be in the forefront to ensure that the losses incurred by the agriculturists shall be taken care of by the government sans any delay. He further underscored the need of having a sophisticated mechanism so that any such troublesome situation in Kashmir is avoided and the poor community is saved from distress and disquiet.
