Jammu and Kashmir Police on Tuesday identified the second militant killed in a gunfight with the forces in Kundalan village of south Kashmir’s Shopian district as Babar, a resident of Pakistan.
The militants killed during the gunfight were identified as Sameer Ahmad Sheikh, a local and Babar from Pakistan. “They were affiliated with Jaish-e-Muhammad militant outfit,” said a police spokesman.
“As the searches were going on, militants hiding inside the house fired upon the search party. The search party in their guarded response fired back, thereby establishing contact with the militan0ts leading to an encounter. Some of the civilians in the nearby houses were quickly evacuated by the security forces,” he said.
The spokesman said that Sheikh was a “school dropout and had joined the JeM outfit after he was reported missing from his home in April 2018.”
On the death of a youth, the spokesman said that some civilians were also injured in “cross firing at the site of encounter”.
They were later evacuated to a hospital for medical attention. “One of the injured persons later succumbed to his injuries while the other injured are stated to be stable now.”
Some arms & ammunition were also recovered from the encounter site.
