Searches launched after detainee escapes from police custody in Sopore

Searches were launched after a detainee fled from police custody in Sopore in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district on Friday.

An official said that Mehraj-Ud-Din Khan alias Marouf of New Colony Sopore who was detained four days ago escaped from police custody from police station Sopore.

He said a manhunt has been launched in and around Sopore to nab the detainee.

Khan, according to the police, was an Over Ground Worker (OGW) of militants. He was arrested four days back by Sopore police during a naka checking.

Few months back, another OGW  Abdul Majeed Mir had escaped from police custody in Bomai Sopore and later on joined Lashkar-e-Toiba.

He was killed along with an associate last month in a gunfight with the government forces at Tujjer on the outskirts of Sopore town.
