The police arrested a man for throwing his ailing mother into a river in central Assam’s Nagaon district late on Wednesday night.
The police said Pramod Agarwala pushed his mother Ratna Devi into the Kolong river from a wooden bridge near a girls’ college. He had brought his mother from their rented house in the Haiborgaon Marwaripatty area on a rickshaw before pushing her into the river.
The man was taken into custody based on statements by some local people.
“We have registered a case against him. He has confessed,” Nagaon Superintendent of Police Shankar Brata Raimedhi, told The Hindu.
Search to begin today
A team of the State Disaster Response Force searched for the body on Thursday. “The body could not be found. We will search again tomorrow [Friday],” Mr. Raimedhi said.
Mr. Agarwal is believed to have told the police that he had intended to jump into the river after pushing his mother. He blamed his desperation to financial difficulties.
Meanwhile, a woman in eastern Assam’s Sivasagar district committed suicide, leaving behind a note saying she was unable to bear the torture inflicted on her by her sons and daughters-in-law.
On Thursday morning, the police recovered the half-burnt body of Anu Baruah from the backyard of her house in Dichial village. A suicide note beside her body said she took the extreme step because of constant abuse by her sons and their wives.
The four have been taken into custody while the body has been sent for an autopsy.( The Hindu )
