Govt announces 4,490 Panchayats, additional one month salary for employees on pols duty

SRINAGAR, SEP 25 (PTK): Ahead of the upcoming Panchayat elections, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Secretary BVR Subrahmanyam on Tuesday announced the total number of Panchayats and Sarpanches in the state besides he said  that all the employees who will be on poll duty will receive an additional one month salary.Addressing a press briefing, Subrahmanyam said that in total there are 4,490 Panchayats in the state and as many Sarpanches. The total number of Panches in the state will be 35,000. There will be around 39,500 elected representatives in our Panchayats.

Subrahmanyam also said that there are 79 urban local bodies and about 1200 wards 600 each in Kashmir and Jammu region.

The Urban Local Body (ULB) polls will be conducted in four phases starting October 8, whereas the panchayat polls will be held in nine-phases from November 17.

Chief Secretary V R Subrahmanyam made announcement that “the government also said that they will substantially increase the salary of the Special Police Officers (SPOs)”.

The Chief Secretary also said that adequate security will be given to all those candidates who will contest the upcoming polls. He said that 300 hotel rooms have been booked in Srinagar for candidates and similar arrangements made in south and north Kashmir.

For SPOs, the government is going to make a substantial hike to their salaries in next few days, he said. “The resignations compared to total number of SPOs who are above 30,000 is negligible” he added.

After militants killed three cops, who were abducted from Shopian, at least six have announced their resignations from three other districts of the valley.

While taking to social media, policemen from Shopian, Kulgam and Pulwama quit their jobs. However, India’s Home Ministry in a statement said that no cop in the state has resigned.

Earlier, Three policemen – Firdous Ahmad Kuchay, Kulwant Singh and Nisar Ahmad – were abducted and killed by the militants in south Kashmir’s Shopian on Friday morning. (PTK)
